More than 2 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with Diabetes. The effects of Diabetes can be devastating with Diabetic Retinopathy being the biggest cause of adult blindness in the western world.
Cataracts
The two main causes of visual loss from Diabetic Retinopathy are:
Maculopathy, described as disruption of the macular region of the retina, leading to impairment of central
Retinal Ischaemia resulting in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
As well as the retina, other parts of the eye can also be affected in people with diabetes. Cataracts (right) are more prevalent and are actually the most common eye abnormality seen in people with diabetes, occurring in up to 60% of 30 - 54 year olds
