1st Retinal Screen is an organisation dedicated to supporting Strategic Health Authorities and Primary
Care Organisations respond to the Diabetes National Service Frameworks and clinical governance agendas.
Established in 2005, 1st Retinal Screen’s team of highly experienced and committed professional’s work closely
in partnership with NHS organisations, offering fully managed services to ensure patients with diabetes
are identified and receive the most effective care possible.
Our ground breaking Diabetic Retinal Screening Service helps to diagnose patients at risk of going blind and
enables early screening to prevent diabetic-related blindness.

Key People
Mike Nelson – Director
Mike is a Director of Medical Illustration UK Ltd as well as 1st Retinal Screen Ltd.
With experience in Medical Imaging, including Retinopathy, spanning some 28 years, Mike was one of the first individuals to recognise the need for a comprehensive and fully managed approach to the needs for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening.
Mikes’ extensive experience and background within organisations like Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and the Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine has provided Mike with the in-depth knowledge to determine the complex programme requirements necessary to establish a high quality, comprehensive and patient-centric Diabetic Retinopathy Screening programme
Philip Kirby – Director
Philip has a strong track record in healthcare management, operating within the NHS in a senior management position
for thirteen years before moving to his current role supplying healthcare products to the NHS.
A Graduate from Keele University with a Master in Business Administration Health Executive Programme, Philip is a
key member of the organisation helping to establish population based screening programmes including diabetic
retinal screening services for the NHS.
Philip’s role within both the NHS and private sector has given him an in-depth understanding of the key challenges
facing the NHS and how these can be overcome through cross sector solutions.
Milan Shah – Service Delivery Manager
Milan is a Service Delivery Manager for 1st Retinal Screen Ltd and
Director of Dreams Consultancy Ltd.
With a degree in engineering and MSc in information systems engineering,
Milan has 11 years of experience in the private sector and 6 years in the NHS.
His breadth of experience include IT, project management, change
management, implementations and consulting.
Milan has worked with different PCTs, SHA and the National Screening Committee, to help screening
programmes solve complex problems successfully by implementing
innovative solutions.
Milan's diverse experience is an asset to 1st Retinal Screen and their
clients.
Dominic Clarke - Technical Manager
Dominic is a key member of the organisation, responsible for managing our development
team who are engaged in delivering a range of healthcare services.
Dominic's background gives him an ideal insight into managing the development of our Diabetic
Retinal Screening Service to support the needs of our clients.
